The night is long like a syringe\u00ad\u2014 drip by drip time is drawn\u00ad out slowly\u00ad\u00ad\u2014\r\nand I am red like blood\u2014 darkening, swirling in the vial\u2014 With metal ticks and tocks\r\n\r\nmy steps ascend the staircase to the call\u00ad-room floor\u2014 As one\u2014 dim-lit\r\nand dusted, quiet as a drip\u2014 I pass between the rooms of sleeping residents\r\n\r\nIn an unlit room in the last corner of the hospital there is a sink and the only\r\nopen window\u2014 I've come to boil water\u2014 as it bubbles, I unpackage my noodles\r\n\r\nand break them into a black bowl\u2014 Yellow strings, dried vegetables,\r\ncheap herbs, and salt take time to soak and swell with warmth\u2014 As I wait\r\n\r\nin the slow glow of yellow by the sill\u2014 a gravid wind sails through the window\r\nto centrifuge and settle\u2014 to sedate and center\u2014 cooling my dark and jaundiced skin\r\n\r\nSomewhere else, there are ravines and streams tumbling,\r\nfields of broken stones and blooming hills\u2014 ten-thousand miles away\r\n\r\nfrom here, the sky is an ink wash bleeding grey\u2014 clouds are carrying their weight,\r\nwaddling through mountains and cliffs like pregnant women\u00ad\u00ad\u2014 waiting\r\n\r\nto deliver to an audience of lightning and thunder, then empty into ancient meaning\r\n<\/pre>\n

Other shifts would involve delivering babies and seeing women in triage. Between the pages and work you may be fortunate enough to eat and nap.<\/li>\n
