Like an east wind,\r\nI fly down the stairs\r\nMy gym shoes\u2014 half on\u2014\r\nland on cold,\r\nwet pavement\r\n\r\nMy thank you sails\r\nlike incense\r\nthrough the crisp,\r\nspring night\r\nI hug the warm\r\npaper bag\r\n\r\nWe bow our heads,\r\nsay nothing,\r\nthen I pour your broth\u2014\r\nmelting the pink pork\r\ninto brown\u2014\r\nwarm between\r\nthe stiff, white sprouts\r\n\r\nI clasp my bowl of rice\r\nwith both hands\u2014\r\nthe snowy grains\r\nbed the black meat\u2014\r\nmoist to the smell\r\n\r\nthen the spoons clink\r\nand metal chopsticks tap\r\nagainst the plates\r\n\r\nWe start chewing\u2014\r\nand both forget\r\nthe angry words\r\nwe said today<\/pre>\n
