Combining more than two typefaces gives me headaches because I have no systematic method to find out what works and what doesn’t! I recently read\u00a0a post by H&FJ<\/a> on typography.com about combining typefaces and they offered a guide to help people like me!<\/p>\n

They spoke of 4 techniques when creating a combination\u00a0typeface palette:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Wit<\/strong> – mix typefaces with complementary moods<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Energy<\/strong> – mix typefaces from the same historical period<\/li>\n
  3. Poise<\/strong> – mix typefaces of similar line quality but different textures<\/li>\n
  4. Dignity<\/strong> – mix typefaces with similar proportions but different roles<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    In my example above, I used a “witty” palette by combining 3 typefaces corresponding to a complementary mood:<\/p>\n

    1. Futura<\/strong> =industrial<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n
    2. Gotham rounded<\/strong> = pulpy<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n
    3. Nautik<\/strong> = natty<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      The combination of these different moods makes for a very complex landscape that I’d never think of creating on my own! Looking at it at as a whole, I see that it looks smart but playful, purposeful but with flair, straightforward but not without one or two fun detours.\u00a0Try it!<\/p>\n
