To drive to the hospital\r\nplunged in blue\u2014\r\ntenting this cyanotic skin\r\nof this curve of the world\r\nmy car drives in\u2014\r\n\r\nFragile film\r\nof blue fuzzes the trees\r\nfringes branches\r\nundemarcates silhouettes \r\ninto soft brown brushes\r\nIt blunts the sky heavy\r\nwith glow and ether\r\nuntil all settles\r\ninto holy sediment\u2014\r\ndumb and sedated\r\nthe shade obtunds distinction\r\nof road and tree\u2014\r\nworld and me\r\n\r\nTechnical red punctures\r\nthe morning hue\u2014\r\nspeckling my window\r\nand my mirrors\r\nNeon pulsates through the dye\r\nThe other patrons\r\nof this lonely artery\u2014\r\nour anemic hour\r\n\r\nSoon I will calculate\r\nand I will prescribe\r\nI will congest\r\nthe brain with the gravid\r\nparity of artery and vein\r\n\r\nBut before I step\r\ninto the hospital\u2014\r\nthe drowning hue\r\nheavy horizon\r\nthrombotic mood\r\nI inhale congestion\u2014\r\nflood the soul to breathe\r\n<\/pre>\n

  1. Scrubs<\/a> – blue, green, black, etc; different departments wear different colors<\/li>\n
  2. Radiation fog<\/a> – “usually occurs in the winter, aided by clear skies and calm conditions. The cooling of land overnight by thermal radiation cools the air close to the surface. This reduces the ability of the air to hold moisture, allowing condensation and fog to occur. Radiation fogs usually dissipate soon after sunrise as the ground warms”<\/li>\n
  3. Fimbriae<\/a> – are finger-like projections from bacteria that help them attach to things; Fimbriae are also projections that form a fringe around Fallopion tube ostium, through which eggs move from the ovaries to the uterus<\/li>\n

  5. Anesthesia<\/a> – On October 16, William T. G. Morton (1819-1868) made history by being first in the world to publicly and successfully demonstrate the use of ether anesthesia for surgery. This occurred at what came to be called “The Ether Dome,” at Massachusetts General Hospital on patient Edward Gilbert Abbott.<\/li>\n
  6. Ether<\/a> – the word ether, I really like, because it conjures up images of medicine, heaven, and Final Fantasy 7 to me<\/li>\n
  7. CAM-ICU and RASS<\/a> – in the ICU we can use tools to assess for delirium if they are not too sedated; delirium is a disturbance of consciousness characterized by acute onset and fluctuating course of inattention<\/li>\n
  8. Central Artery<\/a> – John F. Fitzgerald Expressway is a section of freeway in downtown Boston, Massachusetts. I didn’t realize there was a highway named this until after I wrote this poem!<\/li>\n
  9. Family doctors<\/a> – 36% perform minor surgical procedures, 45% treat patients in the ICU, 40% deliver care in hospital ERs, 59% care for newborns, 77% have hospital privileges, 19% provide routine OB care<\/li>\n
  10. Gs and Ps<\/a> – In labor and delivery we use gravidity and parity to describe a woman’s obstetric history<\/li>\n
  11. Chronic congestion<\/a> – “advanced forms of venous disorders, including manifestations such as hyperpigmentation, venous eczema, lipodermatosclerosis, atrophie blanche, and healed or active ulcers”<\/li>\n
  12. Pulmonary embolisms and DVTs<\/a> – pregnancy increases the risk of clots in the lung and legs; VTE is one of the leading causes of maternal mortality in the United States<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
