No bulwark here but\r\nbarren land\u2014\r\nfiltered arctic\r\nbeats the aseptic cowl\u2014\r\n\r\nWhite desert\u2014\r\nstippled with silver\r\nshepherds herding patients \r\ninto rooms\r\n\r\nBlack collars\r\nof diaphragms and bells\r\nhaunt the halls\r\nto calibrate the ill\r\n\r\nThe sterile wraith\r\ndrifts from room to room\u2014 \r\ncounting the numbers and\r\nthe numbers\u2014\r\n\r\nthe whispering and the\r\nmuttering\u2014 the shuffling\r\nof papers measuring the day\u2019s\r\nworth of living for the dead\r\n\r\nWithin the hundred awakenings\r\nin the middle of the night\r\nI awake\u2014 called to purpose\r\na singular demand\r\n\r\nBroad-faced son\r\nstands with family huddled\r\nI tread across\r\nto greet them softly as a monk\u2014\r\n\r\na sigh here, a murmur there\u2014\r\na sign here, a scribble there\u2014\r\nmechanize the ritual\r\nand automate the vow\u2014\r\n\r\nfor whether in sedation\r\nor distraction our lives thrive\u2014\r\nour expectancy in this world\r\nexpires\r\n\r\nMachine and tube\r\nnow absent\u2014 she speaks\u2014\r\nshe calls for her son\u2014 for\r\na life\u2019s width she speaks\r\n\r\nlight and precious things\u2014\r\nlulling and cooing to him\r\nas she is held\u2014\r\nhead inches from the head\r\n\r\nBefore she passed\r\nlike a cloud in the night\u2014\r\nbefore she dimmed\r\ninto the dusk\u2014\r\n\r\nher son emerged from\r\nher gloom\u2014 face of moon\u2014\r\naffirming flame against\r\na darker mountain\u2014\r\n\r\ncountenance of new\r\nsure of death and after\u2014\r\ndifferentiated flash\u2014 swallowed\r\nwhole\u2014 and I was blinded\r\n\r\nAfter she died\r\nhe laid his hands on me\r\nuntil I was unhood\r\n\r\nI know a man\u2014\r\nVision has a face\u2014\r\nWhat can thrive a life\u2014\r\nthe world or unfair hand?\r\n<\/pre>\n
