Does the soul linger\r\nafter the last heart beat?\r\nDoes it uncover the lines\r\nand cords\r\nstrewn on the body\u2014\r\nslide the half\r\ngown aside\u2014\r\nflush on its way over\r\nan exposed old breast\u2014\r\nthen drift across\r\nthe limbs\r\nto slip shyly to the ground\r\nwhere rubber gloves\r\nand wrappers\r\nlie limp?\r\n\r\nOr does the soul push\r\nviolently back\u2014\r\njabbing and slugging\u2014\r\nswinging wildly\r\nagainst the chest wall\r\nonce our palms withdraw\r\nfor retreat?\r\nRabid for air\u2014\r\naverse to rancor\u2014\r\ndoes it rush through\r\nthe throat to escape\r\nonly to break\r\nlike a wave onto a rock\r\nwhen it hits a\r\nplastic tube?\r\n\r\nOr does the soul gaze\r\nthrough the half-closed\r\neyes of a frozen\r\nhead turned\r\nat the nurses and\r\ndoctors who walk away\u2014\r\nsee the hand that grazes\r\na sister's shoulder then\r\ngrabs a chart\r\nto note some thing\r\nthat expired?\r\nDoes it swell and croon\r\nwhen its family members\r\ncup their mouths\r\nand hesitate\r\nto touch or stand away?\r\n\r\nAnd what about the soul\r\nalone when sick?\r\n\r\nDoes the soul examine\r\nthe two residents standing\r\nby the door\u2014\r\ngaping at the green line\r\ntrembling\r\non a black screen?\r\nDoes that soul\r\nwonder what\r\ncould have been done\u2014\r\nwhat could have been done?\r\nOr wonder\r\nif a stranger\u2019s prayer\r\ncan fill an empty room?\r\n\r\nTo palm the hidden and the deep\u2014\r\nwe saw it fold inside its body\u2014\r\n\r\nbecause once we turn away\r\nit will detach and crumble like a leaf\u2014\r\nand when the curtain's drawn\u2014\r\nscuttle in the wind\r\n<\/pre>\n
