From the hallway I can see\r\n    your eyes wide with desire\r\n\r\nYou lie on your bed\u2014 asking\r\n    for water to cool the tongue\r\n\r\n.\r\n\r\nSickle cell chokes\r\n    the vessels, strangles\r\nthe heart, and burns the brain\r\n\r\nIts hand is a grip\u2014\r\n     wringing the limbs like a rag\r\nuntil it drips with fire\r\n\r\nIts mind is a hammer\u2014\r\n     a beating, blunting rhythm\r\nto bury those who tire\u2014\r\n\r\nTo dwell with a bone-hater\u2014\r\n    to lie on its bed of embers\u2014\r\nto climax a crescent-blessing\r\n    with a curse\u2014\r\n\r\nto wait and watch a dozen\r\n    nights in a darkened room\u2014\r\nto stretch your spirit in front\r\n    of open doors and strangers\u2014\r\n\r\nYou surrender to the blinding,\r\n    deafening, awful now\r\n\r\n.\r\n\r\nI stand by the door\r\n    between the hallway and your room\u2014\r\n\r\nholding a soldier\u2019s faith\r\n    and a finger dipped in water\u2014\r\n\r\nwatching you lie on your bed\u2014 \r\n    waiting for me to say the word\r\n\r\nI give the extra dose\r\n    for our momentary glory\r\n<\/pre>\n
